For a product review, my thoughts on this pilgrim argan oil hair mask and to find out whether it lives up to the claims, visit - HERE
It uses pretty mainstream ingredients and the ingredient list itself is quite short and crisp.
Ingredients (as it says on the packaging) - Aqua, Glycerine, Coco Betaine, Polysorbate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Argan Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycol Stearate, Glyceryl Monostearate, Glyceryl Oleate, Dimethicone, PEG-7, Phenoxyethanol, Benzenemethanol, White Lotus Extract, Camellia Extract, Hyaluronic acid, EDTA, Sodium Gluconate, Parfum.
SKINCHEM SCIENCES' DEEP DIVE INTO THE INGREDIENT LIST
STAR INGREDIENTS - Argan Oil, Camellia Extract, Glycerine, Hyaluronic acid, White lotus extract
INGREDIENT DESCRIPTION :
Aqua - It is the universal solvent and that makes it the main ingredient in skincare and haircare products. It is capable of dissolving more substances than any other liquid thus, making it the first choice as a solvent to cosmetic formulation chemists.
Glycerine - It is a natural moisturizer and humectant which is present naturally in our skin. It works wonders even in low concentrations of 3% and can be used in 20% - 40% for severely dry skin.
Argan Oil - It is an anti-oxidant and an emollient but is super hyped for nothing in the cosmetic industry. No doubt it is good but there's not much to it that makes it stand out from other plant oils.
Camellia Extract - It is a type of green tea and the extract/oil generally comes from its seeds. It has proven to show anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory action.
Hyaluronic Acid - It is a humectant which means it attracts and holds onto the water molecules thus working as a moisturizer. It is a big polymeric molecule and depending on its molecular weight, it performs different actions. I am hoping it's at least above ~50 kDa so that it provides the moisturization it promises.
Glyceryl Monostearate - It is a common emulsifying agent i.e. it helps in the mixing of oil with water. It gives a smooth and soft feeling by acting as an emollient. It is biodegradable but can be comedogenic i.e. it can cause breakouts by clogging the pores.
Benzenemethanol - It is a preservative but it also provides perfuming, viscosity controlling and it is also a solvent. (Don't be afraid by its name which says 'benzene'. It is a gentle preservative when used in low concentrations like 1%)
Phenoxyethanol - It is a preservative as well.
PEG-7 - It is an ester made from glycerine and coconut oil and is used as a humectant and also as a solvent.
Dimethicone - It works as an emollient and is a common silicone that acts as an occlusive which means it forms a protective layer making the strands smooth. It fills in the damaged cuticle of the hair and allows light to reflect through a more even surface thus giving the sense of shine.
Glyceral Oleate - It is an ester formed by glycerin and oleic acid and acts as an emollient, emulsifying agent and also as a perfuming agent.
Cetearyl Alcohol - It is used as an emollient (moisturizes and gives the 'feel good' sensation), viscosity controller, emulsifying agent, emulsion stabilizer and surfactant. Phew!! that's quite a list... yes, it is indeed a multitasker but it can be irritating to some people and is a known comedogen.
EDTA - It is a chelating agent. It binds to metal ions that come into the formula due to the water and thus making the formula harmless.
Sodium Gluconate - It is a chelating agent and is used for neutralizing metals like iron and copper. Besides that, it is also a pH regulator and a humectant.
Glycol Stearate - It is a commonly used surfactant, it forms thick lather when combined with water. It is also used for viscosity control in the product.
Coco Betaine - It is a surfactant and is used to soften hair and to reduce static in the hair strands.
Parfum - The term 'parfum' or 'perfume' in a cosmetic formula can stand alone mean the fifties or hundreds of chemicals that are added to make the formula smell good. It is quite a generic term and to be honest, I'm not a fan but I've made my peace with it as I'm not allergic to fragrance. If you are someone with sensitive skin or allergies due to fragrance, this might not be a good experience for you.
[ADDITIONAL FACT - Anti-oxidants in skincare has become typical nowadays but it is equally promising in haircare as well. Anti-oxidants buffer against the free radicals generated due to sun exposure or pollution thus protecting from damage. Besides that, they are also proven to improve scalp health and promote healthy hair growth. Vitamin E is a known antioxidant that has shown promising results for improving hair health in general.]
