IN-DEPTH INGREDIENT DISCUSSION

Shampoo for hairloss, Re'equil Hairfall Control Shampoo
Aqua
- Just like any other product, the first ingredient is aqua aka water here as well. It is the universal solvent and that makes it the main ingredient in skincare and haircare products. It is capable of dissolving more substances than any other liquid thus, making it the first choice as a solvent to cosmetic formulation chemists.

Glycerine - It is a natural moisturizer and humectant which is present naturally in our skin. It works wonders even in low concentrations of 3% and can be used in 20% - 40% for severely dry skin.

Niacinamide - It is nothing but Vitamin B3. It is a cell-communicating i.e. signals our skin cells to ‘behave’ better just like retinol and peptides. Besides that, it is also a skin brightening, anti-acne and a humectant (provides moisturization by absorbing water from the atmosphere) as well. Depending on the percentage and type of product (haircare or skincare), it can be used for boosting collagen, wrinkle smoothening, fading dark spots, improving skin barrier function and has anti-inflammatory and photoprotective properties as well. It is a well-known ingredient in skincare (especially for brown skin) but is also used in hair care as it improves hair texture.

Dexpanthenol - It is also known as panthenol or Pro-Vitamin B5 and is a soothing agent and a humectant. Vitamin B5 is pantothenic acid and Pro-Vitamin B5 is nothing but the pre-cursor to pantothenic acid. It moisturizes skin and also helps our skin to produce lipids that are important for maintaining a healthy skin barrier. It also has anti-inflammatory and skin protecting abilities and reduces irritation caused by fragrance, preservatives etc. in the product.

C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate - It is a surfactant with strong cleansing and generous foaming properties. It might leave a 'squeaky clean' feel but can be quite harsh on the scalp and leave it dry and the ends brittle. Many sulphate free shampoos contain sulfonate as a cleansing agent and so is the case over here as well. On the brighter side, it is biodegradable.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine - It is commonly used in a lot of bath products (shampoos, shower gels, face cleansers and foam baths) as a surfactant and a 'bubble-stabilizer' (yep you read it right! It stabilizes the bubbles that we love so much in our foam baths). It is mild on the skin and is biodegradable. Besides that, it works well with other surfactants and helps in maintaining the right balance between cleansing and over-cleansing. It also maintains the viscosity of the formulation.

Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine - It is an amphoteric surfactant and again a mild and gentle foam booster and viscosity controller. It is biodegradable as well.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate - All cleansers, no matter how gentle they are, have to interfere with the natural oils in the skin (or scalp which is basically skin with a greater number of hair follicles) to do their job i.e. cleanse. However, this particular surfactant is claimed to be so gentle that it barely interferes with the skin barrier. It is very commonly used in surfactant-less cleansers (cleansers that claim they 'clean' without surfactants). It is biodegradable and forms rich foams.

Decyl Glucoside and Coco- Glucoside - They are again, mild and biodegradable surfactants with high foam forming and stabilizing abilities. Decyl Glucoside also stabilizes the emulsion i.e. it facilitates the mixing of oil and water for a longer time.

Polyquaternium - 7  and Polyquaternium - 22 - It is a cationic (positively charged) conditioner and acts as an anti-static and forms a film on hair strands hence making hair shiny. It also provides better slip hence acting as a de-tangler and making hair softer and manageable.

Glyceryl Oleate - It is an ester formed by glycerin and oleic acid and acts as an emollient, emulsion stabilizer and also as a perfuming agent.

Biotin - It is Vitamin H and is responsible for stronger hair and nails. It also smoothens skin.

Nasturtium Officinale Extract and Tropaeolum majus Extract - They're also known as watercress extract and Indian cress extract respectively. These two extracts have been found to treat chronic hair loss which is a hair loss caused by the closing of hair follicles and eventually losing their ability to generate new hair shafts. These are two of the ingredients that allowed the brand to sell their shampoo as a 'hair fall control shampoo' but it's unclear whether it will be helpful against hair fall in such small concentrations that too in a rinse-off product. Besides that, watercress extract is used as a perfuming agent and the Indian cress extracts have shown some anti-microbial, anti-bacterial activity.

Piroctone Olamine - It is used as a preservative and is also helpful for scalp infections that lead to dandruff. As dandruff can cause hair thinning, it helps control it as well. It shows antimicrobial and antifungal properties too.

PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate - It is an emulsifying agent and is also used as a thickener.

Hydrolysed Wheat Protein - It is a humectant thus attracts water towards itself and holds onto it thus providing moisturization. It also forms a thin film (layer) on the hair strands leaving them smooth and silky. It can also reduce the irritancy caused due to harsh surfactants.

Disodium EDTA - It is a chelating agent. It binds to metal ions that come into the formula due to the water thus making the formula harmless. It keeps the formulation stable for a longer time.

Glycol Monostearate - It is a common emulsifying agent i.e. it helps in the mixing of oil with water. It gives a smooth and soft feeling by acting as an emollient. It is used to give a pearl-like sheen to the formula.

Citric Acid - It acts as a buffering agent in the formula. It is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and gently exfoliates the scalp leaving it smooth.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone - (Good luck pronouncing that) They are super effective preservatives but are only allowed to use with each other and only in rinse-off products that too under a concentration of 0.0015% (Yep they're effective even at such low concentration). They can be irritating but that should not be a problem for most of us when used in rinse-off products like shampoos.

Fragrance - The term 'parfum' or 'perfume' in a cosmetic formula can stand alone mean the fifties or hundreds of chemicals that are added to make the formula smell good. It is quite a generic term and to be honest, I'm not a fan but I've made my peace with it as I'm not allergic to fragrance. If you are someone with sensitive skin or allergies due to fragrance, this might not be a good experience for you.

Ci-45100 and Ci-42090 - They're colouring agents.

[ADDITIONAL FACT- Surfactants are generally anionic i.e. negatively charged but there are several cationic (positively charged), amphoteric (both positively and negatively charged) and non-ionic surfactants as well. Amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants are added generally to boost the foaming properties of the surfactant.
Hair has a negative charge when wet and conditioners are cationic i.e. positively charged. Conditioning after shampoo is recommended as conditioners neutralize the negative charge, as you remember correctly, opposites attract.]

DO PARABENS REALLY CAUSE CANCER? - SKINCHEM SCIENCES- MYTH OR FACT?

DO PARABENS REALLY DESERVE THE HATRED THAT THEY GET IN THE BEAUTY AND PERSONAL CARE INDUSTRY?  Is not the question that we ask ourselves when we're proudly using our paraben - one of the most hated and feared ingredients in the personal care industry - free products.  Let's take a deep dive into its origin, uses and composition to find out whether they really deserve the hatred. WHAT ARE PARABENS? Speaking from a chemistry point of view, parabens are a class of esters derived from para - hydroxybenzoic acid. These are colourless, odourless and crystalline solids with satisfactory solubility in water. Speaking from a cosmetic use point of view, they are preservatives i.e. they protect our cosmetic products from microbes. Every time your moisturizer (or makeup or shampoos, or lotion or toothpaste .. literally any product that's packaged) comes in contact with air or you touch it, it is exposed to several micro-organisms like bacterias, fungi etc. The products need some sort o
